Susan Foord

“My approach when painting has remained consistent throughout.  In preparation a very heavy cartridge paper is laid over board, then stretched and primed ready for use.

"Using mixed media, I work intuitively putting down colour and marks.  A struggle ensues out of which an image of clarity and unity eventually emerges which corresponds to an inner feeling of ‘rightness’ and ‘wholeness’.

"The resultant images are mostly evocative of landscape or seascape, seemingly through a window.  Sometimes images are suggestive of still life.”

Susan Foord's luminous and radiant paintings bring to mind a remark by Winifred Nicholson -  'What I have tried to do is to paint pictures that can call down colour, so that a picture can be a lamp in one's home, not merely a window.'

She was born in London in 1945 and studied fine art at Leeds Metropolitan University 1980-83.  She became a visiting lecturer there 1990-92.  After moving to Bristol in 1993 she was elected a Member of the Royal West of England Academy in 1997.
