Fanny Shorter

Fanny was born in Winchester in 1983.  She trained as an illustrator and graduated from Brighton University in 2006.  Since then she has been working as a freelance illustrator and printmaker.  She works at Cockpit Arts in London.

“I have a fascination with intricacy and pattern and a love for anything that requires a closer look.  This idea forms a very strong influence over any work that I produce. I am inspired by old anatomical and botanical drawings, maps, diagrams, architectural drawings, and anything with meticulous detail and lots of dense information.

Most of my work is screen printed and the process enables me to reproduce the smallest details from my original drawings.  I have recently been given a beautician’s magnifying lamp enabling me to draw accurate detail with a very fine Rotring pen.  From the first drawing I then create the different colour layers to be printed using tracing paper and then transfer the images to the screen.  Each colour is printed separately, lightest colour first, darkest last, with each layer needing to be accurately aligned with the previous layers.  The process can be frustrating and time-consuming but is ultimately immensely satisfying.”

This suite of screenprints features some of the world's smallest birds printed to scale.
