Fiona Stanbury

"My work has always been about colour but until I went to Cyprus it related to an English landscape tradition, using tonal values and darker colour. During my 14 years in Cyprus I painted Nicosia from various rooftops, which inspired me to focus on colour relationships, pattern and purer colour. My Nicosia cityscapes developed into a concern with colour as contrast, colour as a source of mark-making, colour as mood-creator, colour as movement. My landscapes have reflected this shift in interest and I tend to structure my paintings by colour relationships. It is important that the painting is a world in itself, and the marks are primarily of paint.

Whilst living in Cyprus, I travelled in Greece, Egypt and Israel. Shapes and colours there have entered my work and influenced my vision. The Middle-Eastern tradition, which uses a more decorative, flatter kind of space, profoundly affected my work. Other influences have been the work of Matisse, Bonnard, Heron, Braque and Hodgkin."

Fiona trained at Canterbury College of Art but says her training proper began when she moved to Cyprus in 1984.
