Gerry Whybrow

"My work has developed from observation at particular locations around the Kentish Coast.  I like the objectivity of working at particular sites, it enables me to work uninhibited, allowing for the eye to discover and the mind to exercise imagination and selection as the work emerges.  The process then often requires further experimentation with paint qualities worked on in the studio.

"My early recollection of the sea began as soon as I arrived and lived in Whitstable, just after the war in 1947 and I have loved the sea all my life.

"The seascape has been my main subject since returning to this coast and moving to Deal in 1998.  It has been a relentless study of the natural forces; the rain, the storms and sunlight all engulfed by the movement of the wall of waves and the patterned rhythms of water pouring over the beach, illuminated by the dramatic light of changing skies.

"I am fascinated by the sea's fluctuating palette of colours.  The mystery suggested by the depth of dark tones of grey, brown and black that contrast eloquently with whites, silvers and golds.  I am always intrigued by the way the eye and mind follow the horizontal line on the edge of this vast space."

Gerry trained at Hornsey College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, London.  His work has won the David Murray Landscape Award, a British Council Award and two Arts Council Awards.
